3. e-Science & Technology
Name of the project: Semantic Technology for Dynamic Publishing
Summary of the project: By offering a quantum leap in the accessibility of information,
the semantic technology turns into enabling factor for the so-called knowledge economy.
The new approach is known as Semantic Web (or Web 3.0). Ontotext (a Bulgarian software
company) with the database engine OWLIM, supported the core of the BBC’s World Cup
2010 website, which was widely recognized as the first high-profile demonstration
of semantic technology. OWLIM was used in a critical function in a web site which
combines very high visibility (peaking at 20 million requests per day) with high
level of dynamicity (hundreds of updates per hour) and high-level of interlinking
of subjects, topics and various sorts of related factual information about players,
teams, etc. This project was the ultimate demonstration how semantic technology
can reduce the cost of publishing very dynamic information and enable much deeper
handling of user requests. BBC was able to maintain on its World Cup website about
700 aggregation pages, which offer up to date information on specific subjects.

"Are amphetamines addictive?"... These and similar questions helped us understand
the need in our society of reliable information about drugs, their effects, the
risks of using them, as well as actual information where to find help. The drugs
info line is the first of its kind in Bulgaria and has the following advantages:

2. e-Culture
Name of the project: Nagledna Agitacija (NA); Composition; CIRCLE;
Summary of the project: NA aims to recall the visual methods used in communism for
a political propaganda and to find the place of the letters in that process. In
order to function better, the complex world of the communist society needs norms
to rule the human behavior. How these rules have been shown, how the mechanism for
their creation has evolved in time. NA is a space for memories and stories from
the time of communism. The viewer is also a part of that space and can leave own
traces in the space of the installation; Composition: A Composition of two-dimensional
forms is located into a single surface. The forms are being manipulated by the observer
until there appear some new and temporary spaces. Shape, colour and sound remain
autonomous elements and at the same time in a single process of continuous changes
they set pictures in which the authenticity of the visible starts to disappear.
The computer work reveals in front of the spectator an internal logic and own structure.
Three principal elements are used divided into three parts each: 1. Shape (geometric)
- circle, square and triangle. 2. Colour (primary) - red, blue, yellow. 3. Sound
- three different fragments. The spectator (user) can change the layers by himself
(which one of the geometric figures to be on the top, which one to be in the middle
and which one - at the bottom), the colour (which form which colour should take)
and can arrange the musical fragments (which one should follow which). These way
very different variations of a picture which consists of only a couple of elements
can be obtained - a total of 214 different variations can be performed. CIRCLE:
A full cycle (circle) of the human communication are presented at three figures
that lie on the basis of one creative act, their transformation - before, at the
same time and after the combined action.
